Advertising Age has an interesting article today about the increase in patent requests for green-themed marks during 2007. According to AdAge, “Green” was the most popular word among marketers, with applications more than doubling from 1,100 in 2006 to 2,400 in 2007. That follows a 23% increase in applications in 2005 and a 37% increase in 2006.
The number of “Green” related web site names, logos, slogans, package designs, and just about anything else you can think of is growing dramatically too – and can only increase if you take the patent requests as a guide.
So, if “Green” is the new “Black” and everyone is suddenly trying to stand out in a crowded marketplace by positioning themselves the way everyone else is positioning themselves, will anyone truly stand out? The “Green” bubble will certainly be interesting to watch (at least for those of us that find it fun to read publications like Advertising Age).
