I was sifting through my Twitter feed today, and the following quote came to mind.
“If coincidences are just coincidences, why do they feel so contrived?” – Fox Mulder, X-Files, Clyde Bruckman’s Final Repose
Of the 158 accounts I follow, some of them are actually COMPANIES as opposed to people. The account has the name of the organization I’m following, not the name of a hard-working employee. This usually means that the posts are going to be sales/marketing pieces as opposed to actual updates about what the sender is up to, which was the original intent of Twitter.
I’m actually perfectly happy following company accounts and letting them send 100% promotional spots into my daily Twitter reading. A tip to these folks, however, is that when using social networking – the message should not appear contrived. Work in conversational tones and don’t send Twitter messages along the lines of “WOW, I JUST FOUND THE ONLY MAKEUP I’LL EVER US AGAIN!” when the message is coming from the same company that the attached link directs the reader to.
