Twitter, Facebook, PBS and online giving

I had the great honor of working with the local PBS station, East Tennessee Public Television, last night to raise funds during a three-hour program titled The Appalachians.

When standing in front of the camera requesting donations, we constantly ask ourselves just who is watching and how to best connect with them. Last night was an eye-opener regarding the technological savvy of PBS viewers (at least during this one program here in East Tennessee).

As soon as the first live break ended, I started getting messages from my followers on Twitter. Then the email started coming in. By this morning, I had 12 new Facebook friend requests (and my name was only mentioned a couple times last night). Also, online giving was about as popular as the phones.

This social networking thing isn’t slowing down anytime soon. Regardless of your business, it cannot be overlooked.
