“Back off man, I’m in social media,” or “Don’t cross the streams.”
“There’s something very important I forgot to tell you! Don’t cross the streams… It would be bad… Try to imagine all life as you know it stopping instantaneously and every molecule in your body exploding at the speed of light.” – Egon Spengler / Ghostbusters.
Was Egon Spengler talking about Protonic Reversal or Social Media?
It seems that everyone wants to post everything that happens to them on every possible social media channel available. Every day someone asks me the best way to make their blog post to Google +, Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn.
The first thing I try to point out is that each of these channels tends to have a different audience and nuance to communication, that crossing your streams isn’t necessarily a good idea. Without digging deeper, think about it. Do you want your professional contacts on LinkedIn getting the same feed you send your rowdy friends on Friday night?
Now, as we all know…in the end, the Ghostbusters saved the world by crossing the streams. But that’s a different blog article.
